Smith completed 31 of 37 for 321 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions, including a 23-yard touchdown to Garrett Wilson on fourth and six that, with a two-point throw, tied it 24–24 with 4:11 left. He was sacked five times, the last with 51 seconds left at the Detroit 28, fumbling to end the Jets' final drive, in a 31–24 loss to the Lions.

31 to 24, Lions, 51 seconds left, second and 10 at the Detroit 28, straight out of the Jets' last timeout. Geno Smith had driven them there from their own 31. He was sacked for a loss of 13 and fumbled, and Detroit's Jack Campbell recovered. −4.7 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and −11.3 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it. Detroit knelt twice and it was over. Three minutes earlier his fourth-and-six throw to Garrett Wilson had gone for a 23-yard touchdown after a Jets challenge, and his two-point throw to Sterling Shepard had tied it at 24.
The line: 31 of 37 throws, 321 yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions, sacked five times. The Jets' 42 pass plays, sacks included, were worth +10.8 expected points. 15 of 19 for a hundred 33 yards before halftime, 16 of 18 for a hundred 88 after. On third down, 10 pass plays, eight throws, seven completions, five conversions. On throws of 20 air yards or more, five of six for a hundred 43. The touchdowns: 24 yards to Kenyon Sadiq on second and 12 in the second quarter for a seven to three lead, four yards to Jeremy Ruckert on third and four early in the fourth, and the one to Wilson. The two-point try after the Ruckert score, to Wilson, failed. The sacks did real damage besides the last one: one on third and four at midfield in the first quarter forced a punt, and two in a row in the third, starting from second and six at the Detroit seven, turned that drive into a 42-yard field goal. He also scrambled twice for 12 yards. No game of his since 20 16 with 20 or more throws has a higher completion rate.
He threw to eight receivers, and 13 of the 36 throws with a receiver went to Wilson, eight to Sadiq and five to Ruckert, with Adonai Mitchell inactive, per ESPN.
Back in June the preview had Smith as a no-call built on two numbers from his last season with the Raiders: 17 interceptions and 55 sacks, both the most in football, beside a completion rate that said the passer himself was intact. Week 1 was 19 of 24, no sacks. Week 2 was 27 of 41 with four sacks, two on the first two snaps of overtime. Three games: 77 of a hundred two, 783 yards, four touchdowns, no interceptions, nine sacks. The interceptions have not come; the sacks have, and one of them ended this game. Three games settle little. The Jets are at the Bears on Sunday the fourth.
