Quiet week for Jahmyr Gibbs, which for a freshly extended franchise back in late August is the plan working. He sat Saturday's 17 to 13 win over Washington along with Jared Goff, Isiah Pacheco and Sione Vaki, per Tim Twentyman at the team's website, while Detroit's reserve backs handled the work — a hundred 69 rushing yards as a group, per Avik Das at Heavy, with Trayveon Williams and Jacob Saylors taking the touches. No practice reporting in the window touched Gibbs at all, two weeks after the contract standoff that briefly kept him out of team drills resolved with an extension.
The one live variable in his profile kept moving in the same direction: Pacheco, the veteran signed to complement him, was on the sidelined list at Thursday's practice with his knee, per Justin Rogers at the Detroit Football Network, and has still not played a preseason snap. Whatever share of early-season work was earmarked for the complement keeps drifting toward the lead back by default.
Back in June we made the volume argument on Gibbs — a top-five back two years running while sharing his backfield, now with David Montgomery's hundred 58 carries gone to Houston — and this week brought no usage data, no injury, and no change in the room except the one that helps him.
What to watch: cutdown is Sunday, August thirtieth — the composition of the running back room behind Gibbs after cuts, and Pacheco's practice status, are the two items that shape the September split. We'll check after cut day.
