Jakobi Meyers — Week 1: Two Catches, One a Thirty-Two-Yard Touchdown

Meyers caught both of his targets Sunday: eight yards on second and seven in the second quarter, and the thirty-two-yard touchdown on second and nineteen from the Cleveland thirty-two that made it 31–0 early in the third. He also ran two yards for a first down on third and one at midfield on the opening touchdown drive, in a 34–10 win over the Browns.

Second and 19 is not usually where a touchdown comes from. Third quarter, 12 18 left, Jacksonville up 24 to nothing at the Cleveland 32, after a four-yard loss and a false start had turned first and 10 from the 23 into second and 19: Trevor Lawrence deep left to Jakobi Meyers, 32 yards in the air, touchdown, 31 to nothing. That throw was worth +3.8 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — the second-largest figure for any Jacksonville play on Sunday, behind only Parker Washington's 30-yard score in the first quarter.
The rest of the line is short. Two targets, two catches, 40 yards, one touchdown, +4.7 on the two throws. The other catch was eight yards on second and seven at the Jacksonville 42 with 12 51 left in the half, short left, to midfield for a first down on the drive that ended in Cameron Little's 47-yard field goal. And there was one carry: third and one at midfield with 11 oh six left in the first quarter, no huddle, around left end for two yards and the first down, on the drive that produced the game's first touchdown. Three touches, three first downs, one score.
He was one of 10 Jaguars thrown to on Sunday. Washington had six targets, Brenton Strange and Brian Thomas three, Meyers and Josh Cameron two, and five others one each. One of Meyers's two targets came before halftime, when Jacksonville had 19 pass plays, and one after, when it had five. The four touchdown throws were spread across four receivers, and Meyers's was the longest of them.
Back in June the preview made no call on Meyers: a friendly floor, and a crowded Jacksonville room that capped it. Sunday the room was as crowded as advertised — 10 different targets on 23 throws — and the floor still produced 40 yards and a touchdown on two catches. One game with two targets is not a share; it is two well-chosen throws, and that is what the June read expected. Jacksonville is at the Broncos on Sunday the twentieth.
