Jalen Tolbert's name does not appear in the play-by-play of Sunday's game. Dolphins On SI reported before kickoff that he would be active for the first time this season, and Dolphins Talk's list of Miami inactives, which included Caleb Douglas, did not include him. He was not thrown to, not handed the ball, and not named on a penalty, a return or an injury note. Miami threw 36 passes and lost 24 to 10.
What the passing game did is the football here. 36 throws, 20 completions, 210 yards, no touchdowns, one interception. Among wide receivers, Malik Washington was thrown to 10 times, Chris Bell seven, Kevin Coleman Jr. four and Ryan Miller three; the tight end Greg Dulcich had seven. Bell's seven were worth +3.5 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and Washington's 10 −3.5. 10 throws traveled 20 or more yards in the air and one was caught.
Back in June the preview's read on Tolbert was a change of scenery into a wide-open receiver room — one touchdown and eight percent of the Cowboys' targets last season, a seven-touchdown year behind that, and a one-year deal in Miami that was not a roster lock. Sunday was his first game in uniform this season and it produced nothing the data can see. One game with no targets is not a role; it is the first line of one. Miami is at the Vikings on Sunday the fourth.
