Ja'Marr Chase's afternoon against the Jaguars ended early in the second quarter. Jacksonville led three to nothing, 13 36 left in the half, third and six at the Jacksonville 39. Joe Burrow threw short over the middle and Chase took it 17 yards to the 22. +2.6 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position. Two snaps later, after a sack, he caught a four-yarder on second and 21, a face-mask penalty on Jones added 15, and the play-by-play marks Chase injured on the play. He does not appear in it again.
The line: three targets, three catches, 27 yards, two first downs, +5.1 expected points on the targets. The first catch was six yards on first and 10 from the Cincinnati 41 late in the first quarter. Burrow threw 53 passes with a receiver named, and Tee Higgins had 16 of them.
Back in June the preview's case for Chase was volume, a target tree with one trunk, and his share had gone 12, 29 32 percent through three weeks. Four games: 28 targets, 21 catches, 212 yards, three touchdowns. Sunday's three came before the injury note, so they say little about the role.
