James Conner's situation got its answer, and it is the cleanest answer any Cardinal received this week: he was placed on injured reserve with a designation to return after failing to progress to team drills in camp, per Jess Root at Cards Wire. He will miss at least the first four games and is eligible to return after that minimum, per Donnie Druin at Sports Illustrated. Druin's accounting of the summer fills in the shape of it: Conner was limited to individual drills through training camp, appeared in none of Arizona's four preseason games, is 31, is in the final year of his contract after restructuring this offseason to stay, and — as Druin characterizes it — has been working back from a foot and ankle injury suffered in Week Three of last season. The last public word from the coaching staff remains the timeline refusal from earlier in camp — Mike LaFleur declining to name a date and framing the standard as return to performance, not return to play — which Druin's report carries forward unchanged.
The roster moved on without waiting. Arizona kept three backs — Jeremiyah Love, Tyler Allgeier and Bam Knight, per Druin — while Trey Benson was waived, Corey Kiner traded to New England, and Evan Hull and Tre Stewart waived, per Jason Owens at Yahoo Sports, Bailey Leasure at Arizona Sports, and Root. Darren Urban's read at the team website frames the three-back room as confidence in Knight and no urgency on Conner's return.
Both halves of the last episode's watch line resolved together. Did he enter team drills before the finale? No — that failure is the stated reason for the move, per Root. Does he open the season on the active roster or a reserve list? A reserve list. The opener is September thirteenth against the Chargers, so the earliest the designation lets him return is after Week Four — at least four games, not exactly four, and nobody has put a date on it.
Back in June we said the question on Conner was never the player but the job — a rehabbing veteran behind a rookie drafted third overall, with the foot the first thing to watch. The foot has now cost him the season's first month at minimum, and the job was rebuilt without him in the room. We'll keep the file open.
