17 to 10, Lions, two 29 left in the third quarter, second and six at the New York 42. Jared Goff threw deep left to Jameson Williams, who went out of bounds at the 21 after 21 yards. +1.9 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and 4.4 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it. On the next snap Goff found him again, nine yards to the 12, and that drive ended on the first snap of the fourth quarter with Jahmyr Gibbs' one-yard touchdown for a 24 to 10 lead.
The line: four targets, four catches, 49 yards, two first downs, no touchdown, +3.3 expected points on the targets. The other two catches came in the first quarter: 14 yards out of bounds at the Detroit 27 on the first snap of Detroit's first drive, from its own 13, and five yards on second and seven, pushed out at the Detroit 48. Four targets tied Sam LaPorta for third on the team, behind eight each for St. Brown and Gibbs, 13 percent of Detroit's 31 throws with a receiver. His 49 yards were third on the Lions, behind Isaac TeSlaa's 66 and Gibbs' 65.
Back in June the preview called Williams Detroit's deep threat with a defined role: 65 catches, 1117 yards and seven touchdowns last season across all 17 games, on roughly a third of the team's air yards, with the variance that comes with that job. Week 1 fit the description, nine targets carrying a hundred 27 air yards, four catches for 45. Week 2 was four targets, fifth on the team, two catches, 33 yards. This week was four targets again, all caught. Three games: 17 targets, 10 catches, a hundred 27 yards, no touchdown. Two straight weeks at four targets is below the volume the June read leaned on; three games settle little, and this week at least every ball his way was caught. Detroit is at the Panthers on Sunday night, the fourth.
