16 to eight, Rams, four 38 left in the third quarter, second and five at the Los Angeles 47. J.K. Dobbins went up the middle for five yards to the 42, and the ball came out, with Omar Speights credited with forcing it. Pat Bryant recovered at the 41 and carried it to the 34. The run still counted as five yards and a first down, +1.0 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and the drive ended in Nate Adkins's touchdown and the two-point catch that tied it at 16.
The line: 17 carries, 49 yards, two first downs, five of the 17 successful, −1.9 expected points on the carries; two targets, one catch, four yards. The carries went −2, four, three, four, six, six, two, three, nothing, five, five, nothing, one, six, two, two and two. Four before halftime for nine yards, 13 after for 40. The other first down was third and two at the Los Angeles 34 early in the third, up the middle for three. Three carries inside the 20: first and goal at the five in the third quarter, no gain, two snaps before Bryant's touchdown; and two on the winning drive, two yards to the 13 two to the five. No carry went for more than six.
17 of Denver's 25 designed runs were his; Bo Nix had four, RJ Harvey two, Tyler Badie and Jaylen Waddle one each, and the 25 gained 78 yards. Jonah Coleman, who split the carries with him evenly in Week Two, was on injured reserve with an ankle injury, per NBC Sports.
Back in June the preview leaned against Dobbins: named the lead back after a 10-game season, two downs by design, and a career in which he has never played a full season. It credited him with five yards a carry last year when he played. Week One was eight carries for 36. Week Two was 10 for 36, and a hamstring injury reported during the game by NBC Sports' Pro Football Talk. Sunday he played, took the largest workload of his season with Coleman out, and averaged under three yards a carry. Three games: 35 carries, a hundred 21 yards, 3.5 a carry, no touchdowns. The two-down usage matches the preview; the efficiency has not shown up yet. Denver is at the 49ers on Sunday the fourth.
