Joe Burrow smashed the Dolphins with short, efficient throws: 23 of 32, 190 yards, 4 touchdowns, no interceptions, no sacks. He was worth +9.4 expected points added (EPA) on 33 dropbacks, +0.29 per dropback. EPA is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position.
The throw that put the game away came with 47 seconds left in the third quarter. Up 21-10, second and 7 at the Miami 45, he threw deep over the middle to Ja'Marr Chase for a 45-yard touchdown: +4.6 EPA and a 28-10 lead. Every other completion went 14 yards or fewer.
Third down was where he won it. Two of his other touchdowns came on third down: 4 yards to Mike Gesicki on the opening drive and 6 to Samaje Perine early in the second quarter. The fourth went 2 yards to Tanner Hudson with a minute left in the half, one snap after an 8-yard catch by Chase on third and 2. Cincinnati converted 9 of 13 third downs.
The one blemish came after the catch: Chase Brown fumbled a short completion at the Miami 7, up 14-7, and Miami kept the ball.
He beat his own baseline across the board. Through Week 4 he had +20.6 EPA on 171 dropbacks, +0.12 per dropback, with 3 interceptions and 9 sacks. His completion percentage over expected (CPOE), completions against what the throws' difficulty predicted, was +8.2, after +5.6 across those four games. Four touchdown passes topped his previous high of 3, in Week 3.
