2026 NFL Season · Sunday, Aug 23
James finally returned to practice Saturday — the absence now identified as a rib fracture — and split carries with Kaelon Black in red-zone drills. The problem is what happened while he was out: Black's debut made the case James never got to make.

Jordan James returned to practice on Saturday, and the mystery absence finally has a name: a rib fracture, per David Bonilla at 49ers Webzone, who listed him among the day's returns. He went straight into work, splitting carries with rookie Kaelon Black, and both backs scored in red-zone drills. After a camp spent entirely on the sideline, that's the first on-field entry in his 20 26 file.
The trouble is the race didn't wait. Black made his professional debut Thursday against the Chargers and ran eight times for 33 yards in the first quarter, running through contact — "I was real happy with him... He ran real physical," per Kirk Larrabee at 49ers Webzone — and Casey Lima at 49ers Webzone had framed that game beforehand as Black's chance at the number-two job behind Christian McCaffrey, who himself hasn't practiced since August 8. Sincere McCormick added a 37-yard run and a touchdown in the same game, per Brooke Evans at 49ers.com. James missed all of it; his competition now has game tape and he has one practice.
The conversation around the room has largely moved to Black, but what the reporting actually supports is narrower: an audition still open, with one preseason game left and a returning back who was the presumptive favorite in the spring. Back in June the preview said the camp battle was the entire James case, which makes this the week that decides it. What to watch: the carry split in Thursday's finale in Las Vegas — his first possible game snaps of the summer — and the shape of the backfield when the roster goes to 53 on Sunday. We'll check after cut day.
