12 to 10, Vikings, 12 21 left against the Dolphins, third and six at the Minnesota 47. Kyler Murray threw short middle to T.J. Hockenson, four yards in the air, and Hockenson ran it to the Miami 39 for 14. +2.1 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and 7.4 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it, the biggest gain on any Minnesota pass all day. Miami had just made it a two-point game; that drive ended in a field goal.

The line: 27 of 37, 247 yards, no touchdown, no interception, four sacks, −0.7 expected points on 41 pass plays, close to even. The halves tell it. Before halftime, 11 of 19 for a hundred 12 yards and three of the four sacks, −6 expected points. After halftime, 16 of 18 for a hundred 35 yards and one sack, +5.3. On third down he was 11 of 13 for 72 yards, with seven first downs and two sacks. The costliest sack was third and one at his own 35, two 43 left in the third, up 12 to three: 11 yards lost, −3.5 expected points, and a punt. He ran three times for 21 yards and knelt three times at the end. The ball went 13 times to Hockenson, eight to Aaron Jones and six to Jordan Addison.

Back in June the preview called Murray a watchlist: a quarterback with no starting job yet, a career floor built on his legs, and a named job as the one condition. Sunday was his second full game as a Viking and the most complete passing day of his three, with the legs a small part of it. Three games: 45 of 71, 433 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions, seven sacks. He has had the job two weeks running; the touchdowns have not come with it yet.
