Kyler Murray won the game with his legs against the Colts: 14 of 24 for 150 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions, three sacks, and 40 yards on two scrambles in Minnesota's 16-10 win at home. Over 29 dropbacks, sacks and scrambles included, he was worth +2.52 expected points added (EPA), what a play is worth given down, distance and field position.
The snap that decided it was the first of the fourth quarter. Down 10-6, third and 8 at the Indianapolis 40, he scrambled right and was pushed out at the 5 after 35 yards: +3.8 EPA and 18.9 points of win probability, the estimate of each side's chance to win, the biggest swing of the game. On the next snap he threw short left to T.J. Hockenson for the 5-yard touchdown and a 13-10 lead. In the first quarter, on fourth and 1 at his own 46, he ran up the middle for the yard, +2.35 EPA, on a drive that ended in a field goal.
The scramble carried the rate: his other 28 dropbacks were worth -1.28 EPA together. Through Week 5, in four games, he had completed 69 of 101 for 662 yards, 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions, at -0.085 EPA per dropback over 122 dropbacks; here it was +0.087. Completion percentage over expected (CPOE), which compares completions with what each throw's difficulty predicts, was -7.5, against +5.7 through Week 5.
