Ladd McConkey had his most receiving yards of the season against the Rams, and they bought little: 6 targets, 4 catches, 86 yards and -2.5 expected points added (EPA), in a 24-9 loss. EPA is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position.
The long one came down 10-9 with 4 seconds left in the half. Third and 5 at the Chargers 45, Justin Herbert threw deep right and McConkey caught it for 54 yards, brought down at the Rams 1 as time expired. With no clock left to use it, the play was worth -0.2 EPA. His 30-yarder on first and 10 at the Chargers 35, down 3-0 in the first quarter, was worth +2.1 EPA and 8.6 points of win probability, the estimate of each side's chance to win, and the drive ended in Cameron Dicker's 34-yard field goal.
His other four targets came on the Chargers' first two drives, both punts: a 3-yard catch, a 1-yard loss on second and 12, and incompletions on third and 7 and third and 13. An offensive pass interference call on him was declined on Quentin Lake's first-quarter interception.
The day fell short of his season rate. Through Week 6, in five games, he had 18 targets, 13 catches, 200 yards, a touchdown and +11.9 EPA, +0.66 a target; here it was -0.42.
