Luther Burden Camp Update — August 31: Back at Practice, No Team Reps Yet

2026 NFL Season · Monday, Aug 31

Burden returned to practice Wednesday for the first time since his August eighth groin injury, but took individual drills only — and was still limited to individual work at Thursday's joint practice. He made the fifty-three by name, and the receiver room shrank to five around him. The Week One read stays positive but rests on reporting, not a participation designation.

Luther Burden III got back on a practice field this week, and the qualifier is the story. He returned Wednesday in a limited capacity — individual drills only, heading inside when seven-on-seven began — per Courtney Cronin at ESPN, his first practice work since the groin injury he suffered August eighth in a tangle with cornerback Tyrique Stevenson, per Patrick Finley at the Chicago Sun-Times. The next day, at Thursday's joint practice with the Titans, he was still limited to individual work, catching passes in warm-ups while the team periods went on without him, per Kole Noble at A to Z Sports, who wrote that Burden looked like a player who will be ready to roll for Week One. That last part is a reporter's read, not a team designation — practice-participation designations don't exist until the first game-week report.

Cut day put him on the roster in so many words. The 53 the Bears set Sunday carries five receivers "including Luther Burden III," per Finley, and SI Bear Digest's post-cuts chart lists him as a starter next to Rome Odunze, per Jerry Markarian. The room thinned around him: Scotty Miller released, per Adam Schefter of ESPN as relayed by A to Z Sports; Maurice Alexander, the team's preseason leader with 15 catches and a hundred 52 receiving yards, among the cuts, per Alan Rubenstein at Yardbarker; Kaden Davis cut, per Patrick Norton at CHGO Sports; Ray-Ray McCloud III to injured reserve, per Josh Alper at Pro Football Talk. Behind the two starters on the same chart: Kalif Raymond, Zavion Thomas and Jahdae Walker.

Back in June we doubted the schedule more than the player — a role that needs to roughly double from four targets a game — and the schedule question now has its final preseason answer: per the week's reporting he never took a team drill after August eighth, so the doubling will have to happen without a single competitive summer rep. Last week's watch line asked whether he'd get back to any practice work before cutdown — he did, narrowly — and whether the Week One expectation survives the first game-week injury report, which hasn't arrived yet; the expectation currently stands on the beat's read of a player still confined to individual drills, nothing firmer. One upgrade worth naming: last week's only read on him was secondhand. This week's are firsthand, from reporters watching him on the field. We'll check on him again when a real participation report exists to read.
