Michael Pittman Camp Update — August 31: The Injury Has Two Names
2026 NFL Season · Monday, Aug 31
Michael Pittman Junior returned to practice in pads on Monday, August twenty-fourth, and made the fifty-three-man roster Sunday. The injury he came back from is reported two ways — a minor hamstring per Athlon Sports, a right ankle per Steelers Now and RotoWire — the team itself has never named it, and no source establishes full participation.
When Michael Pittman's week moves the numbers, you'll know — every episode, in one weekly email.

Michael Pittman Junior is back on the practice field — and the injury he came back from has two names, depending on who is reporting it. Pittman returned Monday, August 20-fourth, in pads, participating in stretching during the media-availability window, per Chris Ward at Steelers Now — who lists the injury as a right ankle, as does RotoWire the same day, citing Alan Saunders of Steelers Now. The other name is four days older and comes from outside the building: a minor hamstring, per Paolo Songco at Athlon Sports on August twentieth, which is the version our own August 20-third episode ran with. The team has never named it at all — the camp blog covers the return and the rehab without ever saying what the injury was, per Steelers.com. Credible outlets, four days apart, and nothing in the week reconciles them. We are not going to pick a side the reporting has not picked: what is established is a lower-body injury the club has left unnamed, called a minor hamstring by one outlet and a right ankle by two others.
Our August 20-third episode was titled around the injury finally having a name. That premise moved backwards this week — but everything that matters more moved forwards. Pittman practiced, three days before the finale. He made the 53-man roster Sunday, per Teresa Varley at Steelers.com. His own framing was workmanlike: "It's not ideal, but I feel like I've played enough football that I'll be ready to go when it's time," per Steelers.com. He sat Thursday's finale in Buffalo, but alongside the whole core of the roster — Bob Labriola at Steelers.com listed the 27 veterans and starters held out, Pittman among them — so the absence says nothing about the leg.
What no source establishes is full participation. In pads and stretching during the media window is the ceiling of what has been reported; nothing in the week says he practiced without limitation, and we will not upgrade it.
Back in June this case rested on hundred-target volume and one of the sturdiest availability records at the position. The volume half was never threatened. The availability ledger now reads: about two weeks missed by his own account — "I've been out for about two weeks, just been rehabbing," he said, per Steelers.com — back on the field August 20-fourth, on the roster, no setback reported since. That is a recovering record rather than a clean one — and the timing work with a new quarterback is still the unbought item, since Aaron Rodgers took no preseason snaps and no report describes the two of them working together yet. More when the picture sharpens ahead of the opener.
