The full read
Nico Collins was thrown to on Houston's first snap against the Cowboys and caught it. First and 10 at the Houston 15, nothing to nothing: C.J. Stroud deep over the middle, 45 yards to the Dallas 40. +2.9 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position. Seven snaps later it was third and three at the seven, and Stroud found Collins short over the middle for the touchdown. +2.2.
The second one came in the third quarter, Houston up 16 to 13, the possession after Jaylin Noel's 53-yard kickoff return. Second and six at the Dallas 22: deep right to Collins, 22 yards, touchdown, with an unnecessary-roughness penalty on Dallas enforced after the score. +2.5, and Houston led 23 to 13.
The line: eight targets, seven catches, a hundred 18 yards, two touchdowns, five first downs, +9.4 expected points on his targets, the most of any Texan. The catches went 45, seven, five, 18, 22, 13 eight. The five was third and 17 in the first quarter, 12 short, before a 51-yard field goal. The 13 was third and two at the Houston 42 with four 53 left, down 27 to 23, a first down on the drive that put Houston ahead, worth nearly seven points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it. The eight came on the last drive. The one incompletion was deep right in the third, 32 yards in the air.
Eight targets were the most on the team, ahead of Xavier Hutchinson's five, Kayshon Boutte's four and Noel's three, on 26 Houston throws with a receiver.
Back in June the preview called Collins the quiet alpha, with a lead role and availability as the one variable. Week 1 was 10 targets, seven catches, 75 yards and a touchdown. He does not appear in the play-by-play for Weeks 2 and 3. Sunday the lead role was there again, by a clear margin. Two games played: 18 targets, 14 catches, a hundred 93 yards, three touchdowns.
