Omarion Hampton — Week 3: Twice to the One, No Touchdown

2026 NFL Season · Half-PPR Scoring · Monday, Sep 28

Hampton carried 15 times for 56 yards and two first downs, and twice took the ball to the Buffalo 1 without getting the next snap: Keaton Mitchell caught the touchdown after the first, and a false start and a field goal followed the second. No fumble, one target, in a 24–16 loss to the Bills.

10 to 10, eight 54 left in the third quarter, first and three at the Buffalo three. Omarion Hampton went up the middle for two yards to the one, +1.5 points of win probability — win probability is the chance of winning the game after the play against before it. It was the second time Sunday he had put the Chargers at the Bills one, and the second time the next snap was not his. In the first quarter, no score, second and three at the three with 11 17 left, he went around right end for two; on third and one Justin Herbert threw to Keaton Mitchell for the touchdown. In the third, the next snap was a false start, then two throws to Tre Harris, and the drive ended in a 21-yard field goal and a 13-to-10 lead.

The line: 15 carries, 56 yards, no touchdown, two first downs, seven of the 15 successful, −0.4 expected points added on the carries — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position. One target, incomplete short left in the second quarter. The carries went seven, four, two, two, three, two, one, one, six, two, four, two, three, 10 seven. Eight before halftime for 22 yards, seven after for 34. The 10 was the longest, second and seven at the Chargers 20 with three 16 left in the third, up 13 to 10, for a first down. The other first down was seven yards on first and five with seven 25 left in the game, down 17 to 13, his only fourth-quarter carry and the last running-back handoff the Chargers called. Six of his carries started at or inside the Buffalo 23 inside the 10. For the first time this season, no fumble.

The split: 26 Chargers designed runs, 15 to Hampton, eight to Keaton Mitchell, two to Herbert and one to Kimani Vidal. Hampton had one of Herbert's 34 throws.

Back in June the preview called Hampton a watchlist: a rookie season of nine games with a real receiving role, 32 catches, and two things to watch, 20 touches a game as the confirming number and availability. Week 1 was 12 touches and a lost fumble that was the biggest swing by any pass or run in that game. Week 2 was 25 touches and a second lost fumble. Sunday was 15 touches and a clean ball. Three games: 50 carries, a hundred 93 yards, two touchdowns, two lost fumbles, and one game of three over the 20-touch line. Three games settle little, and the goal-line snaps went elsewhere twice in one afternoon. The Chargers are at the Seahawks on Sunday the fourth.
