2026 NFL Season · Sunday, Aug 23
The one starters' completion Thursday went to a different tight end, Charlie Kolar, and no Gadsden usage was reported in the loss. The alignment question we set for this week went unanswered — with one game left to answer it.

The alignment test we wanted from San Francisco week never ran. The Chargers' starters played exactly one three-snap series Thursday, and the single completion on it went to a tight end — but the tight end was Charlie Kolar, on a nine-yard throw from Justin Herbert, per Myles Simmons at Pro Football Talk. Oronde Gadsden does not appear in the coverage of the 41-to-17 loss that we can cite, so his participation and usage went unreported in a game that quickly became reserves against reserves, seven penalties and 229 total yards, per Eric Smith at the team's website.
Weigh the Kolar catch for exactly what it is: one route, one throw, in a series too short to mean anything about the pecking order. But it is also a reminder of what the June preview said about this room — that nothing was being handed over. That preview's read on Gadsden was a split: bank the target volume that carried his productive rookie year, distrust the per-target efficiency, and watch the Mike McDaniel fit, with veteran David Njoku signed on hedge money and Jim Harbaugh calling the tight end group four deep. The evidence Gadsden had been stacking — the 14-yard catch in Houston, the deliberate weight gain, the Jonnu Smith tape study — is still the most recent affirmative case on file. This week simply added nothing to either side.
What to watch: Thursday's finale against the Rams, the last preseason chance to see who lines up with the first offense and who works the red zone, and then the cutdown to 53 next Sunday, where the number of tight ends kept — Gadsden, Njoku, Kolar, Scott Matlock — will describe the snap competition better than any August quote has. We'll check after cut day.
