Parker Washington Camp Update — August 31: Tentatively Listed as the Top Target

Parker Washington was back on the field for Tuesday's joint practice with Tampa Bay, days after the undisclosed injury that erased his previous week — and he came back into an emptied room. With Jakobi Meyers in a cast and Brian Thomas held out after a shoulder scare, Carlos Sanchez at Black and Teal described Washington as tentatively the number-one target — in the same account that has the rookies Josh Cameron and CJ Williams getting plenty of reps in Meyers's absence. The label deserves its caveat: it was that day's arrangement, created by two absences, not a depth-chart promotion. The durable version arrived Sunday, when John Oehser's roster breakdown at the team's website listed Washington among the projected starters.

The cutdown itself reshaped the room beneath him. Jacksonville kept five receivers — Washington, Meyers, Thomas, Cameron and Williams, per John Shipley at Jaguar Report — and the two receivers who made the most preseason noise were both waived: Trebor Peña, who led the team in preseason receptions, receiving yards and yards per catch with 10 grabs on 13 targets for a hundred 49 yards and a score, per Sanchez, and Michael Wortham, cut two days after returning a punt 63 yards for a touchdown in the finale, per Oehser's game report. Wortham carries a footnote that flatters Washington: after the finale, head coach Liam Coen praised Wortham's forward lean and called their play styles similar, per Sanchez at Black and Teal. The player Coen compared to Washington did not make the team. Washington himself sat the finale with the rest of the front-liners.

Our last episode asked whether Washington would return before the finale and whether the reports would put him back at the front of Trevor Lawrence's reads. The first half came back yes outright: he was practicing by Tuesday. The second came back qualified — Sanchez's number-one label was tentative and created by two absences — but Oehser's projected-starter designation is the durable version, and between the two his standing reads intact. The June preview called his year-three breakout real, with target share in a crowded room the open question; last week closed on a missed week at the exact moment roles harden, with the room deepening behind him. Both of those worries moved. He came back within days, and the depth that was deepening got cut. We'll pick up his target picture as the opener approaches.
