30 to 20, Seahawks, three 28 left in the fourth quarter, fourth and seven at the Chargers' 10. Justin Herbert threw deep right to Quentin Johnston, 44 yards in the air, and Johnston was brought down at the Seattle 46. +4.3 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — the most valuable play the Chargers ran all day, and 4.1 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it. Tre Harris caught a 21-yarder on third and four three snaps later, and Dicker's field goal made it 30 to 23 with two 17 left.
The line: two targets, one catch, 44 yards, one first down; one carry for −4. The other target was third and four at the Seattle 22 on the first possession of the game, deep left, incomplete, and the Chargers kicked a field goal. A deep throw to him early in the fourth quarter was wiped out by an offensive holding penalty. The carry came around left end on second and eight at the Seattle 41 in the first quarter, pushed out for a four-yard loss, and cost 6.3 points of win probability; that drive ended in a punt.
Two targets of Herbert's 31 throws put him behind eight to Oronde Gadsden, six to Keaton Mitchell and five to Harris.
Back in June the preview called Johnston a watchlist: eight touchdowns from 51 catches, a rate it expected to come down, on about six targets a game. Through four games: 19 targets, seven catches, a hundred eight yards, no touchdown. Sunday's two targets were his fewest this season, and the 44 yards came on one ball.
