Rashee Rice's preseason ended the way it ran: without a snap. The Associated Press finale preview had Andy Reid declining to say whether Rice and Xavier Worthy would play Friday, per Steve Scott, and the team's own recap of a nine-to-nine tie that Garrett Nussmeier quarterbacked wire to wire never mentions him, per Matt McMullen at Chiefs.com. The closest thing to a stated reason is Reid's grouping on Wednesday — Rice, Worthy, L'Jarius Sneed and Drue Tranquill sat the second preseason game and would likely sit the third, per Charles Goldman at A to Z Sports. Workload, not a new injury. Whatever timing Rice and his quarterback have built this summer has happened entirely on practice fields — and that quarterback's own clearance for game contact has not come, per CBS Sports in reporting dated August 20-seventh.
His spot was never in doubt and was confirmed: Rice made the initial 53 among six receivers, per McMullen and per Marleah Campbell at KCTV5. The room around him did shuffle. Andrew Armstrong was waived despite what Charles Goldman at A to Z Sports called a killer preseason, with Nikko Remigio's punt-return job, in Goldman's read, the likely reason the sixth spot went elsewhere; Jimmy Holiday went to injured reserve, and Jacob De Jesus and Xavier Loyd were waived, per the Chiefs' transaction announcement at Chiefs.com.
Our last episode left "the open question about potential discipline" open one more week. It should not have: the answer existed in reporting from earlier this year. The league closed its personal-conduct investigation without a finding — first reported by Adam Schefter at ESPN in March, per Charles Goldman at A to Z Sports. The separate probation violation, which led to a 30-day jail sentence reported in May by Jacob Camenker at USA TODAY Sports, has drawn no league ruling, and Ian Rapoport at NFL Network said in mid-August, relayed by Goldman, that he does not expect additional discipline, on the reasoning that Rice was already disciplined for the underlying incident through his six-game suspension in 2025. That is his expectation, not a ruling. Nothing new arrived from the league or the courts this week.
The June preview of Rice was about availability — an eight-game sample of alpha production, and a season that depends on the games happening. The update after cut day: the roster half of availability is settled, the discipline half is quieter than we treated it, and the on-field half remains completely untested, zero preseason snaps deep.
