Sam Darnold brought Seattle back against the Broncos and gave the ball away twice at the end: 27 of 51, 278 yards, no touchdown passes, 2 interceptions, 5 sacks. He was worth -4.8 expected points added (EPA) on 57 dropbacks, -0.08 per dropback. EPA is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position.

The defining throw came with 1:31 left in regulation, down 14-11. Seattle had reached the Denver 39 and faced third and 1. Darnold threw short to the left for Tory Horton, and Kris Abrams-Draine intercepted at the Denver 31: -3.8 EPA and -35.2 points of win probability, the biggest swing of the game.

He got one more chance: from his own 46 with 57 seconds left he completed 4 of 5, the longest a 17-yarder to Cooper Kupp, and a field goal tied it 14-14. Overtime ended it: third and 7 at the Seattle 28, a short throw to the left for Rashid Shaheed was intercepted by Ja'Quan McMillian at the Seattle 43, -3.0 EPA, and Denver kicked the winning field goal.

Down 14-3, his 18-yard scramble on third and 10, +2.2 EPA, and his two-point pass to Shaheed got Seattle to 14-11.

51 attempts were his most this season, after 45 in Week 3. In four games through Week 5 he had 7 touchdowns, 5 interceptions and 9 sacks, and -0.10 EPA per dropback on 110 dropbacks. His completion percentage over expected (CPOE), how often he completed passes against what their difficulty predicted, was -4.6, after +2.1 through Week 5.
