Sam LaPorta had a quiet day against the Packers, with one catch that counted: 2 targets, 1 catch, 18 yards and +1.5 expected points added (EPA). EPA is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position.
The catch came tied 17-17 with 2:45 left. Second and 8 at the Detroit 27, Jared Goff threw short over the middle and LaPorta caught it for 18 yards, and a roughing-the-passer penalty added 15 more: +2.4 EPA and 14.1 points of win probability, the estimate of each side's chance to win, Detroit's biggest gain of the game by that measure. The drive ended in Jake Bates's winning field goal. His other target fell incomplete at the Green Bay 6 late in the third.
The 2 targets were his fewest in a game this season. Through his first five games he had 37 targets, 27 catches, 316 yards, 3 touchdowns and +31.6 EPA.
