Tank Bigsby — Week 2: Thirteen Carries and a Touchdown

With Saquon Barkley injured on Philadelphia's first snap, Bigsby carried 13 times for 33 yards and a 2-yard touchdown that tied the game at 7, and caught both targets for 5 yards. Ten of the 13 carries came before halftime; after Barkley returned the two backs had three each. He had one carry in Week 1, in a 24–20 win over the Titans.

Nothing to seven, Titans, 12 53 left in the second quarter, second and one at the Tennessee two. Tank Bigsby went up the middle for the touchdown. +1.0 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and 5.6 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it. The snap before it was also his: first and 10 at the 11, up the middle for nine, another +1.0. Those two carries are most of what his running was worth. In Week 1 Bigsby carried once. On Sunday Saquon Barkley was injured on the Eagles' first offensive snap, and Bigsby's first touch, a short pass to the right that lost two, came on the second.
The line: 13 carries, 33 yards, one touchdown, two first downs, four of the 13 successful, −1.7 expected points on the carries; two targets, two catches, five yards, −0.8 on the targets. The carries went four, one, four, four, two, nothing, nine, two for the touchdown, two, −1, five, −2 three. Nine was the longest, and 33 yards on 13 carries is two and a half a carry. 10 carries for 27 before halftime, three for six after. A two-yard run at the two-minute warning came back on a holding penalty, one snap before DeVonta Smith's touchdown. The catches were the −2 and a seven-yarder on first and 10, both in the first quarter. He also made the tackle on a punt return late in the third.
The split is the story. Philadelphia called 30 designed runs: Bigsby 13, Will Shipley seven, Barkley four, Jalen Hurts three, Marquise Brown two, Makai Lemon one. Before halftime, with Barkley out after the first snap, it was Bigsby 10 and Shipley seven. After halftime, with Barkley back, it was Barkley three, Bigsby three and Shipley none. Inside the Tennessee 20, Shipley carried three times and Bigsby twice, and Bigsby's two were the nine-yarder and the touchdown.
Back in June the preview made no call on Bigsby — the 50-fourth running back off the board at pick one 71, backup money for the backup job, with a seven-touchdown season in Jacksonville two years ago as the proof he could do more — and it said that if anything sidelined Barkley he was the cheapest starter-caliber back available, and to watch the rotation against Shipley and whether the passing game used him at all. Week 1 read Shipley two carries, Bigsby one. Sunday the test arrived for a half: he led Shipley 10 to seven, took the goal-line work, and caught two passes. He also averaged two and a half yards on a day Shipley's seven carries gained 24. One half as the lead back answers who is next, and leaves open how well. Philadelphia is at the Bears on Monday the 20-eighth.
