Tank Bigsby — Week 4: Fourteen Carries, Fifty-Five Yards

Nothing to nothing against the Rams, nine 18 left in the first quarter, third and one at the Los Angeles six. Tank Bigsby had already carried twice on the drive, seven yards and four, after taking over from Saquon Barkley, who the play-by-play marks as injured four snaps earlier. Bigsby went to the left end, and Ford and Young brought him down at the 11, a loss of five. −2.5 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and −8.1 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it. Philadelphia settled for a field goal.

The line: 14 carries, 55 yards, three first downs, six of the 14 successful, −2.7 expected points on the carries; one target, incomplete. The 19 opened the Eagles' first drive of the fourth quarter, up 20 to 10, first and 10 at the Philadelphia 36, through the left guard to the Los Angeles 45, the first of 10 straight runs on a drive that reached the two and turned over on downs. A 19-yard run to the Los Angeles five in the second quarter came back on a holding penalty.

Bigsby had 14 of Philadelphia's 26 designed runs, Will Shipley six, Hurts four and Barkley two.

Back in June the preview made no call on Bigsby: the backup behind Barkley, with a seven-touchdown season in Jacksonville as the proof he could do more if the job opened. Both weeks it opened, Week Two and this one, Barkley had four carries or fewer. 13 carries then, 14 now, the most of his season. Four games: 28 carries, 91 yards, one touchdown.
