Tre Harris — Week 2: Fifty-Three Yards on Third and Five

Harris caught one of three targets for 53 yards, a deep ball on third and five with 11:14 left in the third quarter that reached the Raiders five and was the most valuable pass or run by either team. He also drew a pass interference call on third and three and recovered a Justin Herbert fumble in the fourth quarter, in a 26–14 loss to the Raiders.

10 to seven, Raiders, 11 14 left in the third quarter, third and five at the Chargers 42. Justin Herbert threw deep left to Tre Harris, 20 yards in the air, and Harris added 33 more before Jeremy Chinn pushed him out at the Las Vegas five. 53 yards. +4.6 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and +18.1 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it. No pass or run by either team was worth more on either measure. Two snaps later Oronde Gadsden scored and the Chargers led 14 to 10.
The line: three targets, one catch, 53 yards, one first down, 56 air yards, +3.9 expected points on the targets. The two incompletions: deep right on second and two with 52 seconds left in the first half, 24 yards in the air, and short left on first and 10 from the Chargers six with one 52 left in the game. One target before halftime, two after.
Two more of his plays are not in that line. With five 37 left and the Chargers down three, third and three at their own 31, a throw to him fell incomplete and Hezekiah Masses was flagged for pass interference, six yards and a first down. Then on third and seven with four 49 left, Herbert was sacked and fumbled, and Harris recovered it at the Chargers 46, 10 yards beyond the sack. That made it fourth and one, a Raiders penalty converted it, and the next snap was Omarion Hampton's fumble.
His three targets put him in a five-way tie for second on the team behind Quentin Johnston's five. His 53 yards led the Chargers, ahead of Ladd McConkey's 35.
Back in June the preview called Harris a watchlist — the 70-fourth receiver at pick one 92, a price fronting him growth from 2.7 targets a game as last year's fifth option, with Keenan Allen's hundred 22 targets vacated and a head coach calling him one of three elite receivers. Week 1 was six targets, all after halftime, for 20 yards and the least valuable set of targets on the team. Sunday flipped it: half the targets, the most valuable play of the game. Nine targets in two weeks is still well over the baseline. One 53-yard catch is one catch, and it is also about a sixth of what he gained all of last season. The Chargers are at the Bills on Sunday the 20-seventh.
