Tua Tagovailoa put up the stat line a starter wants from a preseason finale — he started it and completed seven of eight passes for 95 yards in a 17-to-12 win over Miami, per Will McFadden and Tori McElhaney at atlantafalcons.com — and it settled nothing. The clean stat line came with edges: one of his series ended when he fumbled the snap and Miami recovered, the next ended on a fumble by Brian Robinson Junior, and the first-team offense's only touchdown was Robinson's three-yard run. Jason Kandel at Blogging Dirty, quoted by HITC, read the start as an improvement over his rough preseason debut but still not his best body of work.
The week around it moved against him, in stages. On Monday, August 20-fourth, Michael Penix Junior joined team drills for the first time and rotated with Tagovailoa on the first team — an even six-play split in one period, per Tori McElhaney at atlantafalcons.com — with Kevin Stefanski declining to project a starter: "I can't speculate," per Myles Simmons at Pro Football Talk. Wednesday, Stefanski held the line — "I just know it's not today" — saying he would name a starter whenever the depth chart has to be submitted, per Nick Shook at NFL.com. Sunday, Atlanta kept four quarterbacks on the initial 53 — Penix, Tagovailoa, Cooper Rush and undrafted rookie Jack Strand — with the starting job still undecided, per Mike Florio at Pro Football Talk. And on Monday, Aryan Chadha at HITC relayed ESPN's Adam Schefter saying the Falcons "wanna take a look this week at Michael Penix and see how he responds" — an aggregated line, with no venue or date given for Schefter's remark, lighter than Rapoport's report and pointing the same direction.
Our June preview hung Tagovailoa's Atlanta season on a conditional — if Penix's knee kept him out of team work into August, the job would drift his way — and last week we logged the clearance that shut that mechanism off. This week buried it: the banked month of first-team installation became a shared first unit on Penix's first day back, cutdown passed with no name, and the reporting that exists points at the other quarterback. He finished the preseason with the cleanest completion line of his Atlanta summer and less claim on the job than he had in July. We'll be back when the Falcons show their hand.
