Seven all, 44 seconds left in the first quarter, third and one at the Miami 34. Patrick Mahomes threw deep right to Tyquan Thornton, 17 yards in the air, and Thornton was pushed out at the Miami 17. +1.7 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and 5.5 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it. The same drive ended early in the second quarter in Kenneth Walker's touchdown catch, which put Kansas City ahead to stay.
The line: two targets, two catches, 22 yards, two first downs, +2.3 expected points on the targets. The other catch came earlier on the same drive, second and four at the Kansas City 41, five yards and the first down. Both targets came on that one drive in the first quarter; his name is not on a target after it.
Two targets on the 23 Mahomes credited to a receiver. Rashee Rice had nine, Noah Gray three, and Thornton was one of four Chiefs with two.
Back in June the preview leaned watchlist on Thornton — a real per-game beat on thin volume, with last season's 23 yards a catch as the part that regresses and Rice's return crowding the room — and named the pecking order among the targets as the thing to watch. Week 1 was one deep target, incomplete. Week 2 was four catches for 86 yards, two of them long third-down conversions. Sunday was two catches, one of them a third-down conversion again, and then nothing for three quarters while Rice took nine targets. Three games: seven targets, six catches, a hundred eight yards. The volume is thin exactly as the preview said; three games settle little else. Kansas City is at the Raiders on Sunday the fourth.
