19 to 17, Raiders, three 35 left in the game, third and five at the Kansas City 40. Patrick Mahomes threw deep left to Tyquan Thornton, 31 yards in the air, and Thornton carried it 24 more to the Las Vegas five, 55 yards; a Raiders unnecessary-roughness penalty moved it to the two. +5.2 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and 35 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it. No play in the game moved it more. Kenneth Walker scored on the next snap, and the Chiefs never trailed again.
The line: eight targets, five catches, a hundred 11 yards, two touchdowns, four first downs, +9.1 expected points on the targets, the most of anyone thrown to in the game. The touchdowns: two yards on third and two in the first quarter, down seven to nothing, three snaps after Xavier Worthy's 41-yard catch; and eight yards on second and eight on the second snap of the fourth quarter, after Walker's 76-yard run, for a 17-13 lead. In between, 42 yards deep left on first and 10 at the Las Vegas 47 with a minute 50 left in the half, pushed out at the five; that drive ended in a field goal. The other catch was four yards in the first quarter. The three misses: first and 15 in the second quarter, and deep middle on third and 18 and third and seven in the third quarter, both before punts. Four targets before halftime, four after.
Eight targets on the 27 Mahomes credited to a receiver were the most on the team, ahead of Worthy's seven, Travis Kelce's four and Noah Gray's three.
Back in June the preview leaned watchlist on Thornton, a real per-game rate on thin volume, and named the pecking order among the targets as the thing to watch. Through three games he had seven targets. Sunday he had eight, the most on the team, and both Kansas City touchdown catches. Four games: 15 targets, 11 catches, 219 yards, two touchdowns.
