The preview's case for Wan'Dale Robinson was volume, and on Sunday the volume was one target. It was a good one. 10 to 17, Eagles, six 42 left in the third quarter, third and five at the Tennessee 36: Cam Ward threw short right and Robinson ran out of bounds at the 45, nine yards and a first down. +1.6 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and 5.6 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it. The drive went 12 plays and ended in the touchdown that tied the game.
The line: one target, one catch, nine yards, one first down, six air yards. There was one other throw his way. On second and 23 with three 33 left in the fourth quarter, tied at 17, Ward went deep right for him and it fell incomplete, and the play came back on an illegal formation penalty, so it is not in his line. No targets before halftime.
Ward threw 20 times, down from 32 in Week 1. Five went to Carnell Tate, three to Elic Ayomanor, two each to Tyjae Spears, Gunnar Helm and Calvin Ridley, one each to Robinson, Tony Pollard and Daniel Bellinger, and three carry no receiver. Tennessee called 27 designed runs in a game that was close throughout.
Back in June the preview made a call on Robinson, underpriced — a sixteenth-place receiver season with the Giants on a hundred 40 targets, the kind of volume that tends to repeat, going as the 40-sixth receiver at pick one oh seven — and it said to watch his target share against Tate and Ridley. Week 1 was six targets, tied with Tate for the team lead, on a day the Titans threw 32 times from behind, and that episode said the number to watch was targets in the first half. Sunday that number was zero, and the total was one, behind Tate's five and Ridley's two. Seven targets in two games is not the profile the call was built on. It is also two games with opposite scripts, one a blowout and one with 20 throws, and the call was about a season. For now the evidence points against it. Tennessee is at the Giants on Sunday the 20-seventh.
