Lions 31, Saints 30 — Week 1: Up 21-0, Then a Two-Point Try to Survive

Detroit led 21 to nothing with eight 59 left in the third quarter on Sunday, and won 31 to 30 in overtime, and both of those are the same game. The Saints did not score in the first half. Then Tyler Shough threw for 325 yards after halftime, New Orleans scored on five of its last six possessions, and the game was decided when Shough's two-point pass to Bryce Lance fell incomplete with one 34 left in overtime. Detroit is one and oh, at Ford Field, and it took 68 minutes of football to get there.

Start with the defense, because it was two different units and the split is the story. In the first half New Orleans ran 23 pass plays for 85 yards and lost 11 expected points doing it. Expected points added is what a snap was worth given the down, the distance and the field position, and on defense a big negative number is the good direction — those are points the offense gave back by running the play at all. Seven of those 23 were successful. After halftime, 38 pass plays for 325 yards and +10. 21 of 38 successful. Add it up and the day's line is 61 pass plays, 410 yards, three touchdowns, and almost exactly nothing in expected points either way — eighth of the 16 teams in Sunday's early games. The parts of that line that were good were very good. Five sacks, tied with Jacksonville for the most any defense managed in the early games: Aidan Hutchinson had two, including a 10-yard loss on second and two with two 23 left in the fourth, and Derrick Barnes, Roger McCreary and Alim McNeill had one each. Three takeaways: Chuck Clark intercepted Shough at the Detroit 35 with five 31 left in the half, Barnes intercepted him on the first play of the second half, and McCreary's sack knocked the ball loose for D.J. Wonnum to recover at the New Orleans 25, and the third touchdown came on the third play of the drive that followed. Against the run the defense was fifth of the 16 by expected points per carry, 91 yards allowed on 25, and only eight of the 25 were successful for New Orleans — second-best rate of the 16.

The passing offense was middling by the numbers and it made the two throws that won the game. 40 pass plays, 206 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions, one sack, +1 expected point — eighth of the 16. 17 of the 40 were successful, which is thirteenth. Overtime is where it earned its afternoon: second and 11 from the New Orleans 27, Jared Goff deep left to Jameson Williams, out of bounds at the five, 22 yards and 35 points of win probability. Two plays later, second and four, Goff short left to Amon-Ra St. Brown for the touchdown with five oh seven left. St. Brown also had the 19-yard touchdown on third and four with eight 59 left in the third that made it 21 to nothing.

The run game was 33 carries for a hundred 65 yards, two touchdowns, and −1 expected point, which is what happens when both touchdowns are from the one-yard line and 16 first-half carries produce 70 yards and −5. After halftime it was 17 carries, 95 yards, and 11 of the 17 successful. Jahmyr Gibbs went 21 yards around right end on second and four from the New Orleans 45 on the opening touchdown drive, 13 plays and 89 yards from the Detroit 11, and scored from the one at the end of it.

Which brings the ledger of what went wrong. Detroit had 17 snaps inside the New Orleans 20 and scored four touchdowns; the fourth trip, up 21 to 17 with six 35 left, reached first and goal at the one, was pushed back to the 11 by two penalties, and then went a two-yard sack, a four-yard run and a four-yard catch and ended with Jake Bates' 23-yard field goal with two 35 to play. The Saints then went 75 yards in eight plays — Shough to Chris Olave deep middle for 42 on second and 10, then to Juwan Johnson for the touchdown with one 13 left. Detroit went three plays and punted on fourth and one from its own 44 with 37 seconds left, tied at 24, and Daniel Carlson's 62-yard try to win it at the gun was wide right. The one turnover was Gibbs' fumble after a four-yard catch at the New Orleans 40, seven 46 left in the half, ruled down on the field and reversed on a Saints challenge — 12 points of win probability on the review.

Now the part where a Week 1 episode has to be honest about what it is. The ranks in this episode are against the 16 teams that played in the early window on Sunday, not the whole league. What there is, is last year. In 2025 this offense finished fourth in the league in expected points per pass play and third in explosive-play rate, and the team won nine games. On Sunday the passing game was eighth of 16, with one completion of 20 or more yards all afternoon. The defense finished fourteenth in expected points allowed per play and tied for fourth in the league with 49 sacks. On Sunday it had five sacks and three takeaways, and it allowed 410 passing yards. If you want one sentence out of this: the pass rush looks like the unit that finished fourth, the passing offense does not yet look like the unit that finished fourth, and a first half and a second half this different from each other is exactly the kind of thing one game cannot sort out.

Detroit is at Buffalo on Thursday night — a short week. Watch whether the second-half pass defense or the first-half one shows up, and watch the passing game's explosive plays, in that order.
