Amon-Ra St. Brown — Week 3: Eight Targets, All Before Halftime

St. Brown caught 4 of 8 targets for 19 yards and a 4-yard touchdown on second and four with 1:40 left in the half that put Detroit ahead 10–7, two snaps after Isaac TeSlaa converted fourth and two. All eight targets came before halftime; Jared Goff completed all ten of his second-half throws to other Lions, in a 31–24 win over the Jets.

Seven to three, Jets, one 40 left in the second quarter, second and four at the New York four. Two snaps earlier Isaac TeSlaa had converted fourth and two. Jared Goff threw short right to Amon-Ra St. Brown for four yards and the touchdown, and after the kick Detroit led 10 to seven. +1.8 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and 8.6 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it. Detroit did not trail again.
The line: eight targets, four catches, 19 yards, one touchdown, two first downs, −1.4 expected points on the targets. The catches: 16 deep left on second and eight from the Detroit 31 with one 41 left in the first quarter; nothing on third and eight at the Jets 12 early in the second, after which Detroit kicked a 30-yard field goal; −1 on first and 10 at the 17 with two 12 left in the half; and the four-yard touchdown. Four throws to him fell incomplete, three of them in the first quarter, including third and 19 with 30 seconds left in it. Two third-down targets, one caught, neither converted.
All eight targets came before halftime. After it, Goff threw 10 times and completed all 10, to Jahmyr Gibbs, Jameson Williams, Sam LaPorta, TeSlaa and others, and none went to St. Brown. His eight targets tied Gibbs for the most on the Lions, 26 percent of the 31 Detroit throws that had a receiver, but his 19 yards were fifth on the team, behind TeSlaa's 66, Gibbs' 65, Williams' 49 and LaPorta's 44.
Back in June the preview made St. Brown the rare case where the answer is that last season should simply repeat: a hundred 17 catches, 1401 yards, 11 touchdowns, and nearly a third of everything Detroit threw. Week 1 was 14 targets, 10 catches, 67 yards and both Lions touchdown passes, the second of them the overtime winner. Week 2 was 13 targets, nine catches, a hundred 42 yards and two more touchdowns. This week the share fell from the mid-thirties to 26 percent and the yards to 19, in a game Detroit threw only 10 times after halftime. Three games: 35 targets, 23 catches, 228 yards, five touchdowns. One quiet half does not move the June read, and three games settle little either way. Detroit is at the Panthers on Sunday night, the fourth.
