Down 32 to 19 against the Panthers, seven 16 left in the fourth quarter, second and 10 at the Carolina 15. Jared Goff threw short left for Amon-Ra St. Brown, incomplete, and on third and 10 he went back to him, short left again, incomplete. A delay of game and a false start later, on fourth and 20 from the 25, Goff threw short right to St. Brown for four, St. Brown pitched it back to Jahmyr Gibbs, and Gibbs got nine more to the 12, seven yards short. −2.2 expected points added on that last snap — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and Carolina took over.

The line: 11 targets, eight catches, 75 yards, no touchdown, four first downs, −2.0 expected points on the targets. The three longest: 18 deep middle on Detroit's first drive to the Carolina 34, 14 to the Carolina 24 on the drive that ended in Gibbs' touchdown before halftime, and 19 over the middle late in the third. Two third-down targets, third and 14 deep middle to open the fourth and the third and 10 at the 15, and neither was caught. His 11 targets were second on the Lions to Sam LaPorta's 13.

Back in June the preview made St. Brown the case where last season should simply repeat, on nearly a third of everything Detroit threw. Weeks 1 and 2 were about 35 percent of the targets and four touchdowns; last week it was 26 percent and 19 yards; this week 22 percent and 75. Four games: 46 targets, 31 catches, 303 yards, five touchdowns. The share has drifted down two weeks running while LaPorta's rose; four games settle little about where it lands.
