Antonio Williams — Week 1: Four for Four, Sixty-Four Yards

Williams caught all four of his targets for sixty-four yards, four first downs and the one-yard touchdown with one oh five left that made it 22–24, and his thirty-three-yard catch on third and fourteen in the fourth quarter was the largest gain by expected points and win probability on any Commanders pass or run. His four targets were worth plus eight point eight expected points, the most of any receiver on either team, in a 22–24 loss to the Eagles.

Nine to 17, 12 12 left in the fourth quarter, third and 14 at the Philadelphia 47. Jayden Daniels deep left to Antonio Williams, pushed out of bounds at the 14, 33 yards. The catch was worth +4.1 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and 12 points of win probability, the chance of winning after the play against before it, the largest gain on either count that any Washington pass or run produced all afternoon. Three snaps later Stefon Diggs caught the touchdown on third and six from the 10, and it was 16 to 17.
Four targets, four catches, 64 yards, one touchdown, four first downs — every target moved the chains — and +8.8 expected points on the targets, the most of any receiver on either team; Dallas Goedert's five were worth +8.3. Both third-down targets converted. The first came with two oh three left in the half, second and 10 at the Philadelphia 17, Washington down three to 14: short middle, 16 yards to the one, and Jacory Croskey-Merritt scored on the next snap. Then the 33. Then first and 10 at the Washington 37 with five 57 left, the first snap of the final drive, down 16 to 24: short right, 14 yards, out of bounds at the Philadelphia 49. And the last: third and one from the one, one oh five left, short right for the touchdown, the completion upheld on review, 22 to 24. The two-point try went to John Bates and failed. One target before halftime, three after; 55 air yards on the four throws and nine yards after the catch. 64 led Washington in receiving yards.
The ball went nine times to Diggs, four each to Williams and Terry McLaurin, three each to Chig Okonkwo and Bates, two each to Rachaad White and Dyami Brown, one each to Croskey-Merritt and Jaylin Lane, and five throws carry no receiver. Diggs's nine produced 55 yards; Williams's four produced 64. Daniels threw 16 times before halftime for 43 yards and 18 after for a hundred 21, and 48 of the second-half yards were Williams's. His 33 was the only completion among Daniels's eight deep throws.
Back in June the preview said it would not fake precision on Williams — a third-round pick, 70-first overall, going at pick one 74 in July drafts, a slot receiver in a first-year offense, with an open slot job against Luke McCaffrey and Jaylin Lane, and Terry McLaurin's health re-sorting the whole tree — and it said the data starts in September. This is the first of it: four targets, four catches, the biggest play of the fourth-quarter comeback and the touchdown that finished it. McCaffrey was inactive, per PhiladelphiaEagles.com's inactives report, and Lane was thrown to once. Four targets is a small number attached to a large afternoon, and one afternoon is not a role. Washington is at the Cowboys on Sunday the twentieth.
