24 to 16, Lions, four 44 left in the fourth quarter, third and two at the Detroit 19. Geno Smith threw short left to Braelon Allen five yards behind the line, and Allen was brought down at the 23 for a loss of four. −1.7 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and −5.1 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it. It turned third and two into fourth and six, and on the next snap Garrett Wilson caught a 23-yard touchdown that the Jets won on a challenge.
The line: four carries, 14 yards, no first downs; three targets, three catches, three yards. The carries went four, two, seven and one. The first was four yards up the middle to the Detroit seven with eight 10 left in the third, before two sacks pushed that drive back to a field goal. The other three came in the fourth quarter after Breece Hall was hurt: two yards from the Jets 46, seven to the Detroit 20, and one to the 19, all on the tying drive. The other two catches came on the last drive, nothing on first and 10 from the Jets 46 seven yards to the Detroit 33 with one 21 left. An 11-yard catch before halftime came back on a Jets holding penalty. After the final strip-sack he made the tackle on Jack Campbell's fumble return. −0.6 expected points on the carries, −1.9 on the targets.
Allen had four of the Jets' 17 designed runs to Hall's 13, and after Hall was hurt with 11 36 left, all three Jets designed runs were his. Hall was ruled out with a thigh injury, per CBS Sports.
Back in June the preview on Allen was mostly about what was missing: a 20 25 season that lasted four games before a knee injury on a kickoff return, and Hall ahead of him on a new contract. Week 1 was 10 carries for 40 yards, with a fourth-and-one conversion and a touchdown run erased by holding. Week 2 was five carries for seven yards, a touchdown, and a stop on fourth and one. This week was the back left in the game when Hall was not. Three games: 19 carries, 61 yards, one touchdown, and four catches for 11 yards. Three games settle little about the split, and nothing in the play-by-play says what Hall's injury means for next week. The Jets are at the Bears on Sunday the fourth.
