The full read
Braelon Allen gained yards against the Patriots without gaining much value: 17 carries, 78 yards, -3.2 expected points added (EPA) on the ground. EPA is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position. Six of his 17 carries (35%) gained positive EPA.
His best stretch ended in his costliest snap. Late in the first quarter, down 7-3, he ran 13 yards on second and 12, then 16 more on the next snap to the New England 38, +1.7 and +1.0 EPA. The drive stalled at the 30: he gained 2 on third and 4 to open the second quarter, then 1 yard on fourth and 2, stopped by Robert Spillane, -3.2 EPA and -6.9 points of win probability. The Jets turned it over on downs.
His hands helped more than his carries. He caught both targets for 26 yards and +1.5 EPA, the longer a 16-yarder to the New England 48.
Through Week 5 he had 57 carries, 236 yards, 2 touchdowns and -2.5 EPA, with 40% of carries positive, including 24 carries for 116 yards and a touchdown in Week 5. He had 19 receiving yards through Week 5.
