14 to seven, Jets, four seconds left in the third quarter, third and 12 at the New York 17 after a false start. Geno Smith threw short right to Breece Hall, six yards behind the line of scrimmage by the air-yards figure, and Hall took it 43 yards to the Green Bay 40. +4.4 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — the most valuable run or pass play by either team all afternoon, and 9.0 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it. The drive gave it all back: a seven-yard scramble, an aborted snap, a 10-yard sack, a punt.
The line: 16 carries, 29 yards, no touchdowns, two first downs, three of the 16 successful, −7.0 expected points on the carries; five targets, five catches, 63 yards, two first downs, +5.1 on the targets. The carries went one, four, five, −2, two, −3, −1, two, −3, two, 14, three, one, four, −1, one. Five lost yardage. Take out the 14, around left end on second and 10 in the third quarter, and the other 15 gained 15. Eight carries before halftime for eight yards, eight after for 21. He converted third and two with a two-yard run late in the second quarter. The one that did not convert was the two-minute warning of the fourth, tied at 17, third and two at the New York 49: left guard for one. Braelon Allen got the fourth and one and gained nothing. An eight-yard run in the first quarter came back on a holding call. The catches went 12, seven, −3, four and 43.
The split: Hall 16 of the 21 running back carries, Allen five, and Allen had the five-yard touchdown. Hall's one carry inside the Green Bay 20 gained a yard. Five targets were fourth on the team, behind Adonai Mitchell's 12, Garrett Wilson's seven and Isaiah Williams's six, and his 63 receiving yards tied Mitchell for the team lead.
Back in June the preview leaned overpriced on Hall: the fourteenth back off the board after three straight years of decline, with two September watches, the receiving usage — 36 catches a year ago, with a climb back toward 60 enough to scratch the lean — and the goal-line role. Week 1 was 22 carries for a hundred two yards and a touchdown. Sunday the running went nowhere, 1.8 yards a carry, and the receiving half showed up: five catches, seven through two games. The goal-line carry went to Allen. Two games, one for the price and one for the lean on the ground, and the catch count is the number moving in his favor. New York is at the Lions on Sunday the 20-seventh.
