Brock Purdy — Week 1: Nine Throws After Halftime, Two of Them Touchdowns

Purdy threw twenty-five times before halftime for a hundred forty-one yards, one touchdown and an interception, and nine times after it for sixty-four yards and two touchdowns. He finished twenty-five of thirty-four for two hundred five yards and three scores, was not sacked, and ran for eighteen and eight on the ninety-nine-yard drive that made it a three-score game in a 27–7 win over the Rams in Melbourne.

Brock Purdy threw the ball nine times in the second half Thursday night, and two of those nine were touchdowns. The first was third and two at the Los Angeles two with 11 oh seven left in the third, short left to Mike Evans, for a 17 to seven lead. The second was second and eight at the 15 with 13 oh four left in the fourth, short right to Deebo Samuel, at the end of a 99-yard drive that had started at the San Francisco one after Matthew Stafford was stopped on fourth down. Nine pass plays, 64 yards, +5.2 expected points added. Expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position; +5 on nine throws is a passing game that gained well more than its situations asked.
The first half was the other kind of night. 25 pass plays, a hundred 41 yards, and the total came out at −0.4 — slightly less than nothing, even with the 39-yard touchdown to Demarcus Robinson on second and six with four 35 left in the half. The interception came first and 10 at the Los Angeles 46, 12 oh nine left in the second quarter, San Francisco down seven to three: short right for George Kittle, intercepted by Quentin Lake at the 31. The offense got the ball back at its own 14 on its next possession and went 86 yards for the lead, so the pick cost a drive and not the game.
The full line: 25 completions on 34 pass plays, 205 yards, three touchdowns, one interception, no sacks. He also ran five times for 29 yards, and two of those runs were first downs on the 99-yard drive — an 18-yard scramble around left end on second and 10 with 10 seconds left in the third, and eight more around left end on second and four early in the fourth. San Francisco converted seven of 12 third downs, and the shape of the night was that the offense threw to move the ball before halftime and ran to finish after it: nine throws and 18 runs in the second half.
The June preview put Purdy's whole 2026 question on durability — he had been available for about 72 percent of San Francisco's games since 2021, and last season was shaped by the nine games he played rather than what he did in them. Thursday was one game, played start to finish, no sacks, and it does not answer that. What it does say is what the offense looks like when he is on the field for all of it: 205 yards on 34 throws is not a big night, and three touchdowns and a 20-point win is. San Francisco is home to Miami on Sunday the twentieth. Watch whether the first-half passing game or the second-half one shows up.
