29 to 27, 49ers, a minute 52 left, second and 13 at the Arizona 45. Brock Purdy scrambled around left end all the way into the end zone, and the touchdown came back on a George Kittle hold at the 10. The run counts to the spot of the foul, 35 yards, and the ball went back to the 20. McCaffrey got nothing on first down, Arizona used its last timeout, and on second and 10 with a minute 36 left Purdy threw deep right to Kittle for 20 yards and the touchdown. +4.7 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and 35 to 27, 36 after the kick.
The line: 15 completions on 27 throws, 297 yards, four touchdowns, no interceptions, no sacks; 27 pass plays worth +22.9 expected points, the largest passing total of the 28 teams that have played this week. 11 yards a throw. Eight of 17 for 204 before halftime, seven of 10 for 93 after. The first touchdown was third and 12 at the San Francisco 18 with eight 40 left in the first quarter: two yards short left to Mike Evans, and Evans's lateral to Deebo Samuel went 80 more. +7.7 and 20.1 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it, the largest figures of the game. The second was 23 deep right to Evans on the first snap of the second quarter. The third was 10 to Kittle with eight 46 left in the fourth, for 29 to 20 after Arizona had closed to three. On third down he had seven throws, five completions, and all five converted, among them 26 to Jordan Watkins on third and 12 in the first quarter. 34 more to Watkins with 17 seconds left in the half set up a 57-yard field goal. He threw three passes 20 or more yards in the air and completed one, the Evans touchdown. On the ground, the 35-yard scramble and a kneel; an eight-yard scramble in the third came back on a holding call.
The ball went seven times to Kittle, six to Evans, all before Evans left injured in the second quarter, five to McCaffrey, two each to Watkins, Jacob Cowing and Kyle Juszczyk, one each to Luke Farrell and Kaelon Black.
Back in June the preview put Purdy's whole question on durability — available for about 72 percent of San Francisco's games since 20 21, a top per-game passer on a nine-game season. Week 1 was 205 yards and three touchdowns; Week 2 was 20 of 22. Sunday was the fewest completions of the three and the most touchdowns. Three games: 60 of 83, 789 yards, nine touchdowns, one interception, and no sacks in any of them. Three wins and three full games, which is the part of the durability question three games can answer. San Francisco is home to the Broncos on Sunday the fourth.
