The full read
Christian McCaffrey scored both of San Francisco's rushing touchdowns against the Commanders and made its costliest mistake: 16 carries, 64 yards, 2 touchdowns and +5.4 expected points added (EPA) on the ground, and 9 catches on 10 targets for 53 yards and -6.0 EPA through the air. EPA is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position. Of his carries, 69% gained positive EPA.
Both touchdowns came from the 1. Up 7-3 with 4:11 left in the first quarter, third and goal, he went over left guard, +1.1 EPA, for a 13-3 lead after a missed extra point. With 18 seconds left in the half, first and goal after Brock Purdy's fourth-down run, he scored over left guard again for 20-3.
The fumble came between them. Up 13-3 with 9:11 left in the second quarter, first and 10 at the Washington 33, he caught a short pass to the right and ran 12 yards to the 21, where K'Lavon Chaisson forced the ball out and Frankie Luvu recovered: -4.4 EPA and -6.9 points of win probability.
The 16 carries and 9 catches were both his most this season, and +5.4 rushing EPA his best single game. Through Week 5 he had 61 carries for 286 yards, 5 touchdowns and +3.3 EPA, 48% of carries positive, plus 19 catches on 25 targets for 137 yards and +2.9 EPA.
