Back on August 8, 12 practices into camp, Cooper Kupp, at 33, kept winning contested-catch reps against Devon Witherspoon — Seattle's best cover man — per Michael Hanich at SI's All Seahawks. Then on Saturday he sat the preseason opener against Dallas with the rest of the top four receivers, per Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times. A 33-year-old beating the team's top corner in practice while being handled like an untouchable starter: that is a quiet week, and for Kupp it's the good version.

The June preview said the role was the bet. Kupp's first Seattle season was 70 targets and a 16 percent share, the second receiver on the champions behind Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and target volume is the stickiest stat we track, so the argument was that the workload mostly holds. The argument against was just as real: he's 33, the production has slid for two straight years, and age doesn't show up in a volume stat until it suddenly does. The whole file came down to whether the second-receiver job survives another year of calendar.

August has answered only in small ways, but every small answer leans his way. Winning reps against Witherspoon is the kind of evidence the age worry needs to see. Sitting with Smith-Njigba, Rashid Shaheed, and Tory Horton while the backups lost 17 to seven is the kind of evidence the role needs to see — Seattle is treating him as one of the four receivers who matter. And there has been no injury reporting on him at all this window.

Does the June read hold? CONFIRMED — the bet was that the second-receiver role holds, and camp shows a healthy Kupp holding it, with a live rep against the team's best corner as a bonus data point on the age question. Next week: whether the starters get any preseason work at all before the New England opener, and if they do, where Kupp lines up and how quickly Sam Darnold looks his way. We'll check next Sunday.
