Kupp caught 4 of 5 targets for 46 yards and the 7-yard touchdown with 2:55 left that made it 33–31, his first touchdown of the season. His 16-yard catch on third and 14 in the second quarter was Seattle's most valuable play of the game by expected points, in a 33–31 loss to the Commanders.

33 to 24, Commanders, two 55 left in the fourth quarter, first and goal at the Washington seven. Sam Darnold threw short right to Cooper Kupp for the touchdown, and the extra point made it 33 to 31. +1.8 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and 6.7 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it. It finished a 68-yard drive of five straight completions, and it was the last time Seattle had the ball.
The line: five targets, four catches, 46 yards, one touchdown, three first downs, +3.6 expected points on the targets. The biggest of them came in the second quarter: third and 14 at the Seattle 42, down 14 to seven, deep left for 16 yards to the Washington 42, +2.5, the highest figure on any Seattle play of the game, and 6.2 points of win probability. Three snaps earlier he had caught a 19-yarder on second and three from the Seattle 27. That drive reached the Washington two and ended on downs. His other catch was four yards on third and 12 with a minute four left in the half, short of the sticks, before Jason Myers's 57-yard field goal. The one incompletion was third and nine from the Seattle 22 earlier in the second quarter. Four targets before halftime, one after; three on third down, two caught, one converted.
Five of Seattle's 46 throws tied him with George Holani for third, behind Jaxon Smith-Njigba's 14 and AJ Barner's nine.
Back in June the preview leaned toward Kupp: the second receiver on the champions a year ago, 70 targets and 16 percent of the throws in his games, with his age, 33, the question over him, and it said to watch the target share against that 16 percent. Week 1 was three of 24, with a touchdown taken back by an illegal shift. Week 2 was two of 26. Sunday was five of 46. Through three games it is 10 of 96, about 10 percent, eight catches for a hundred one yards, still below the line the preview drew; the touchdown the officials took away in Week 1 finally arrived. Three games settle little. Seattle is home to the Chargers on Sunday the fourth.
