Dak Prescott — Week 3: Twenty-Five of Forty, the Tying Drive

Prescott completed 25 of 40 throws for 276 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions, took one sack, and scrambled four times for 19 yards. He was 14 of 23 for 203 after halftime, converted a fourth and four to CeeDee Lamb, and moved Dallas from its own 35 to the Baltimore 2 in the last 90 seconds for the tying field goal before a 56-yarder on the final snap beat them, in a 34–31 loss to the Ravens in Rio de Janeiro.

31 to 28, Ravens, one 30 left, first and 10 at the Dallas 35. Dak Prescott hit Ryan Flournoy for 13, threw incomplete, then found CeeDee Lamb for 14 on second and 10 to the Baltimore 38 — 13 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it. Flournoy for nine, a seven-yard scramble to the 22, and a deep ball to Lamb drew a 20-yard pass interference penalty to the two with 28 seconds left. From there: incomplete to George Pickens, a false start, a two-yard scramble to the five, incomplete to Pickens on third and goal. Brandon Aubrey tied it from 23 yards with 10 seconds left, and Baltimore kicked a 56-yard field goal on the final snap.
The line: 25 of 40 for 276 yards, one touchdown, no interceptions, one sack — 41 pass plays worth +7.4 expected points added, expected points added being what a play was worth given down, distance and field position. Four scrambles for 19 yards. 11 of 17 for 73 yards before halftime, 14 of 23 for 203 after. On third down, 12 pass plays, 11 throws, seven completions and five conversions, and on fourth and four at the Baltimore 47 in the third quarter, down 17 to 13, 13 yards to Lamb. The touchdown: second and 11 at the Baltimore 19 with one 53 left in the third, down 24 to 13, deep right to Jake Ferguson for 19; the two-point throw to Lamb after it made it 24 to 21. The sack was third and one at the Baltimore one on the opening drive, a loss of nine, and Dallas kicked a field goal. The most costly throw was a completion: first and 10 at the Baltimore 23 with 10 40 left in the third, short middle to Ferguson, who lost the ball to a Travis Jones forced fumble — −5.6 expected points and 19 points of win probability. The longest completion was 49 yards to Lamb from the Dallas five in the fourth, one of two throws that traveled 20 or more yards in the air.
The distribution: 11 throws to Pickens, eight each to Lamb and Flournoy, five to Ferguson, three to Javonte Williams, two to KaVontae Turpin, one each to Luke Schoonmaker, Tyler Goodson and Brevyn Spann-Ford.
Back in June the preview called Prescott an accurate pocket passer — 4552 yards and 30 touchdowns over 17 games last season, with little rushing to fall back on and an age-33 season ahead. Week 1 was 22 of 34 for a hundred 75 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, with none of eight deep throws caught, in a loss at the Giants. Week 2 was 26 of 31 for 279 yards and four touchdowns in a win over Washington. Sunday brought the most throws of his three games. Three games: 73 of a hundred five, about 70 percent, for 730 yards, seven touchdowns and one interception. The accuracy June described is showing; three games settle little. Dallas is at the Texans on Sunday the fourth.
