De'Von Achane — Week 3: Three Carries Before the Injury

Seven to nothing, Chiefs, 10 42 left in the first quarter, second and 10 at the Miami 22. De'Von Achane went around left end for 11 yards and a first down at the Miami 33. +1.5 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position. The play-by-play notes that Achane was injured on the play, and it is the last time his name appears in it. CBS Sports reported a non-contact knee injury on a cut and that he did not return, and after the game Jeff Hafley said, per Yahoo Sports, that "it does not sound optimistic."

The line: three carries, 17 yards, one first down, +0.8 expected points on the carries; one target, an incompletion short right on first and 10 at the Miami 22, one snap before the 11-yarder. The carries went four, two and 11, all on the opening Miami drive, which ended in Ollie Gordon's three-yard touchdown.

The split for the game: 25 Miami designed runs, 17 for Gordon for 41 yards and the touchdown, three for Achane, three for Malik Willis and two for Malik Washington.

Back in June the preview called Achane a lean — the fifth-ranked back a year ago at 5.7 yards a carry, with a receiving role as insurance — and named the offense under Willis and the carry share as the things to watch. Week 1 was 11 of 13 designed runs for 36 yards. Week 2 was 20 carries for 74. Three games: 34 carries, a hundred 27 yards, no touchdowns. What comes next is a medical question, and the play-by-play cannot answer it. Miami is at the Vikings on Sunday the fourth.
