Dontayvion Wicks — Week 2: Five Catches, Five First Downs

Wicks caught 5 of 6 targets for 74 yards and every catch was a first down: four third-down conversions, two of them on third and 12, and a 5-yard catch on fourth and two. His 20-yard catch on third and six with 1:48 left kept the winning drive alive, and his targets were worth plus 11.1 expected points, the most of any receiver in the game, in a 24–20 win over the Titans.

17 to 20, Titans, a minute 48 left, third and six at the Philadelphia 39. Jalen Hurts threw deep right to Dontayvion Wicks for 20 yards to the Tennessee 41. +1.6 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and 17.1 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it. Among Eagles plays, only the winning touchdown six snaps later moved win probability more. Two plays earlier the drive had opened with an incompletion thrown his way. It was the only one of his six targets he did not catch.
The line: six targets, five catches, 74 yards, no touchdown, five first downs, 69 air yards, and +11.1 expected points on the targets, the highest figure for any receiver on either team; nobody else was above +3.8. Every catch moved the chains, and none of them came on first or second down. Third and 12 at the Philadelphia 26, 12 17 left in the first quarter, two snaps after Saquon Barkley left injured: deep middle, 27 yards to the Tennessee 47, +3.6 expected points, the second-largest figure on any Eagles play. Third and four at the Tennessee 14 later on that drive: short left for seven. Fourth and two at the Tennessee 46, six 26 left in the half, tied at seven: short left for five, +2.6. Third and 12 at the Tennessee 28 with two 39 left in the half: short right for 15 to the 13, and DeVonta Smith's touchdown came three snaps later. Then the third and six. Four third-down targets, four catches, four conversions, needing 12, four, 12 six. Four targets before halftime, two after, both on the last drive.
Six targets were second on the team to Smith's 13, and 74 yards were second to his hundred 17. Darius Cooper and Johnny Mundt had three targets each, Makai Lemon had one, and Marquise Brown carried twice and was not thrown to.
Back in June the preview made no call on Wicks — the 80-fourth receiver off the board at pick two 15, a price that matched his last Green Bay season to the decimal, with Philadelphia's trade and a 12-and-a-half-million-dollar extension as the reason to think the Eagles saw more — and it said to watch the pecking order against Brown and Lemon, and whether Hurts looked his way. Week 1 was four targets, all before halftime, a 64-yard catch and a touchdown, and the episode called it half a game of evidence. Sunday he was the receiver Hurts went to on fourth down and on third and long, in both halves. Two games: 10 targets, seven catches, a hundred 47 yards, second on the team in receiving yards both weeks. It is still 10 targets. The pecking order behind Smith has read the same way twice. Philadelphia is at the Bears on Monday the 20-eighth.
