Seven to seven, a minute 16 left in the first half, fourth and one at the Arizona one, out of an Arizona timeout, with two extra linemen reporting as eligible. Emanuel Wilson went up the middle and lost a yard. −4.9 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and −12.3 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it, the largest loss on any Seattle pass or run all day. He had carried on the two snaps before it as well: two yards from the four, then one yard on third and two. Three straight carries inside the five, no touchdown, and Arizona took over at its own two.
The line: 21 carries, 92 yards, no touchdown, six first downs, 10 of the 21 successful, −3.9 expected points on the carries — 4.9 of that on the fourth down, so the other 20 came out about a point to the good. One target, incomplete. Six carries before halftime for 21 yards, 15 after for 71, and 12 of those in the fourth quarter for 58. The longest was 18, off right tackle on the first snap of Seattle's last drive with 11 25 left, up 24 to seven. That drive went 16 plays and 70 yards, 15 of them runs, and did not end until a minute 15 remained; Wilson had 10 of the carries for 48 yards, including nine on third and eight from the Arizona 38 — the one Seattle third-down conversion all day that was not a catch by Jaxon Smith-Njigba. It ended with Wilson stopped for no gain on third and one at the one, and AJ Barner scoring on a direct snap on fourth down. The short-yardage ledger: four carries inside the five for two, one, −1 and nothing, and three tries on third or fourth down with two yards or less to go, none converted.
The split: Wilson 21 designed runs, Jadarian Price 13, George Holani four. Price took the first five carries by a Seattle back; Wilson's first came with 10 51 left in the second quarter. 14 of his 21 came after Seattle went up 17 to seven.
Back in June the preview made no call on Wilson: a back who had posted the same season twice in Green Bay, 502 yards and then 496, 34 straight games played, signed for one year to compete behind the first-round rookie while Zach Charbonnet recovered from a torn knee ligament. Charbonnet is on the reserve list and has to miss at least the first four games, per Rory Parks at Pro Football Rumors. Week 1 was two carries for three yards. Sunday was 21. One game cannot separate a change in the order from a second half spent protecting a lead, and most of these carries came in exactly that. What it does say is who Seattle gave the ball to at the goal line, three times, and that none of the three got in. Seattle is at the Commanders on Sunday the 20-seventh.
