Wilson caught 5 of 7 targets for 57 yards, four first downs and a 5-yard touchdown that put the Jets ahead 14–7 with 2:35 left in the third quarter, and converted a third and eleven with a 16-yard catch. The Jets threw 41 times and his target count stayed at seven while Adonai Mitchell's went to twelve, in a 20–17 overtime loss to the Packers.

Seven all, two 35 left in the third quarter, first and goal at the Green Bay five after a roughing the passer call. Geno Smith threw short right to Garrett Wilson for the touchdown. +1.1 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and 7.0 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it. Smith drew an unsportsmanlike conduct flag after the score. It was the Jets' last touchdown.
The line: seven targets, five catches, 57 yards, one touchdown, four first downs, +2.7 expected points on the targets. The catches: 16 yards deep middle on third and 11 at the New York 29 with eight 50 left in the second quarter, down seven to nothing, worth +2.4 expected points and 7.5 points of win probability, on the drive that tied the game; 17 deep right on the first snap of the second half; the touchdown; and then 11 eight on the first three snaps of the Jets' last drive of regulation, tied at 17, which moved the ball from the 30 to the 49 before the possession died on fourth and one at midfield. Both incompletions came in the first quarter, a third and seven deep left and a second and 10 short left. Two third-down targets, one caught, one converted. Three targets before halftime, four after. 75 air yards and three yards after the catch: nearly everything he gained, he gained before the ball arrived.
Seven targets were second on the team to Adonai Mitchell's 12, ahead of six to Isaiah Williams and five to Breece Hall, 19 percent of the 36 Smith throws that had a receiver attached.
Back in June the preview had Wilson on the watchlist: the nineteenth receiver off the board, a 35 percent target share in the seven games he played last season, and a ceiling that depended on a new quarterback and a new play-caller. Week 1 was six of seven for 79 on a day the Jets threw 24 times, and that episode said the number to watch was his target count on a day they had to throw. Sunday they threw 41 times and the count was seven again. The extra throws went to Mitchell. The catches are coming, 11 of 14 through two games, and the first touchdown is in. The share is well short of 35, and that is the contradiction to carry into next week. Two games settle little. New York is at the Lions on Sunday the 20-seventh.
