Geno Smith got the win against the Browns with his passing in the red: 17 of 30, 182 yards, 1 touchdown, 4 sacks, and -12.7 expected points added (EPA) on 35 dropbacks, -0.36 per dropback. EPA is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position.

The defining snap went against him. Down 12-10 with 4:20 left, first and 10 at the Cleveland 39, he was sacked by Carson Schwesinger back at the Cleveland 48 and fumbled; Adin Huntington recovered and returned it to the Jets 43. That was -5.8 EPA and -36.6 points of win probability, the biggest swing of the game. Cleveland gave the ball back on a fumbled punt at 4:01, and Braelon Allen ran 22 yards for the 17-12 lead.

His best throws bookended the day. On the opening drive, second and 10 at the Cleveland 32, he hit Garrett Wilson short right for a 32-yard touchdown, +3.4 EPA. Down 12-10 with 4:57 left, he found Wilson for 10 yards on third and 4, +11.1 points of win probability. In between, a third-quarter completion to Kenyon Sadiq at the Cleveland 5 ended in a fumble, -3.7 EPA.

It was a sharp turn from his first four games: +19.1 EPA on 138 dropbacks, +0.14 per dropback, and a completion percentage over expected (CPOE) of +7.9. CPOE measures how often he completes passes against what their difficulty predicts; this week it was -9.0. He took 12 sacks across Weeks 1 through 4.
