George Holani has a named role for the first time this camp. Bob Condotta at The Seattle Times, in his final look at the roster before the cuts, characterized Holani as "the third-down back to start the season" — not a depth-chart slot, a specific job. That's Condotta's read of the room rather than a team announcement, but after a summer in which Holani's file was mostly silence, it's the most informative line anyone has written about him this camp. The roster call followed: he's on the initial 53, per Kole Musgrove at Seahawks Wire, with the Seattle Sports staff piece framing the room as Emanuel Wilson "rounding out the backfield behind Price and Holani."
The room emptied around him all week. Zach Charbonnet went to reserve/physically-unable-to-perform, per Charean Williams at Pro Football Talk — a designation that costs him at least the season's first four games. Jacardia Wright — eight carries for 81 yards and a 69-yard touchdown in Nashville on the 20-third, per Cameron Van Til at Seattle Sports — was waived anyway, per the Seattle Sports staff roster piece. Anthony Hankerson, signed for depth the week before cutdown, isn't among the three backs on Musgrove's list. But the man above Holani got the runway: Jadarian Price is listed first on Athlon's post-cut chart, per Bryce Lazenby — a projection — and he holds that spot without a live NFL carry to his name.
Our August 20-third episode watched for Holani's preseason carries and the roster call. The roster call came back yes; the carries never came — no carries for him appear in either game's account — and the window handed back a different answer instead, arguably a better one: the role assignment. Back in June the preview called Holani's value purely a function of the depth chart above him, and this week that function moved in two directions at once. Charbonnet's four-game absence made the total pile of work bigger; Price atop the chart and the third-down framing made the early-down share of it harder to claim. A defined job on a shortened depth chart is more than June promised him. What it produces, the games will say — and we'll come back when they do.
