Gibbs carried 20 times for 99 yards and two touchdowns and caught 7 of 8 targets for 65 yards and the game-winner, 11 yards on third and five from the Jets 11 with 2:30 left in a 24–24 game. He was also stopped for no gain on fourth and one at the New York 45 with 8:37 left, in a 31–24 win over the Jets.

24 all, two 30 left in the fourth quarter, third and five at the New York 11. Jared Goff threw short right to Jahmyr Gibbs, and Gibbs went 11 yards for the touchdown that won it. +3.1 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and 16.8 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it, the largest gain on any Detroit pass or run. The two snaps before it were his too: a one-yard loss from the 16 and a six-yard catch on second and 11.
The line: 20 carries, 99 yards, two rushing touchdowns, seven first downs, 12 of the 20 successful; eight targets, seven catches, 65 yards and the receiving touchdown, +5.8 expected points on the targets. The carries came out close to zero expected points in total, and one run explains it. Up 24 to 16 with eight 37 left, fourth and one at the Jets 45, Gibbs went off left tackle for no gain, −3.5 expected points, and the Jets took over and drove for the tying touchdown and two-point try. The first rushing score was 17 yards around right end on second and four with 11 oh six left in the third, which made it 17 to seven after the kick. The second came on the first snap of the fourth quarter, second and one at the one, after an eight-yard carry to the four and a three-yarder to the one. An 18-yard run late in the third was cut to eight by a holding call on Penei Sewell. Seven carries before halftime for 29 yards, 13 after it for 70.
20 of Detroit's 26 designed runs were his, with Sione Vaki taking the other six. His eight targets tied Amon-Ra St. Brown for the most on the Lions, and his hundred 64 yards from scrimmage were the most by any player in the game. By the weekly stat file it is the fifth game of his career with three touchdowns or more.
Back in June the preview's case for Gibbs was that the committee was gone: David Montgomery and his carries had left Detroit, and the backfield was his to carry. Week 1 was 29 carries for a hundred 56 yards and two touchdowns. Week 2, on a short week, was 16 for 52, with six catches and a touchdown. This week sat in between on the ground, 20 carries, and was his best receiving day of the three. Three games: 65 carries, 307 yards, four rushing touchdowns, 18 catches for a hundred 56 yards and two more scores. The workload the preview described is showing up; three games settle little about how much of it lasts. Detroit is at the Panthers on Sunday night, the fourth.
